Elissa P: #3 Harvey Bernard Milk was born on May 22, 1930 in Woodmere, New York. He was brought up and rasied by his father William Milk who was involved in a retail clothing trade company. While on the other hand his mother died when he was younger. Harvey had realized that he was homosexual by his early teens but chose to keep it to himself. After highscool he went to college at New York State. Soon after he joined the navy and served as a cheif petty officer during the korean war. Milk was discharged ion 1955 and became a highschool teacher in New York. He was now living now with Joe Campell, his lover. This was still kept from his family. He was also a San Fransisco Politition who brought civil rights of homosexuals. He was murdeerd by a rival politition in 1978. http://www.novelguide.com/a/discover/ewb_11/ewb_11_04459.html
Elissa P # 4 With every act of civil disobediance there are people that agree with it as well as people who diagree. The same occured with Harvey Milk and his acts supporting homo and heterosexuals. In Harvey Milk's time many people actually saw homosexuality as a mental disorder. Others thought it was wrong by religious standpoints, such as many Christians. Many places would not permit the kind speaking of Havy Milk and his views on homosexuality with it being such a taboo subject of the times as well as today. Here is an article about a student who was not allowed to even show a presentation about Harvey Milk to her class here. But not everyone opposed Harvey Milks veiws. Many others saw him as a hreo who opened doors for people to be more open. Elissa P: #5 Here is a video of Harvey Milks speech Hope. Here is a link of Harvey Milk in an interview with Juana. Here is an article about opposing views of Harvey Milk Day.
Makayla #6-On November 27, 1978, Harvey Bernard Milk and the Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, a city supervisor rival politician who resigned and wanted his job back. This assassination was the result of the continuing ideological conflicts in the city. Dan White was convicted of a manslaughter rather than a murder. To San Fransisco he was referred to as the most hated man in San Fransisco's history. Five years later he committed suicide. Harvey Bernard Milk made an impact on people in San Fransisco in 2002. In that year he was called the most famous and most significantly open (LGBT) or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender person of that time; he wasn't afraid to be himself. This goes to show that Dan White had a very opposing view on Harvey's right to be an openly gay man and go run for public office.
Elissa:here This is a video of the night Harvey Milk was assassinated by Dan White. Long before this event occured Milk had said, “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door in the country.” Two bullets did enter his brain last night and he hope by his death every homosexual person would open up and not hide this fact. Instead poeple would be able to accept others for who they are instead of judging and steryotyping.
Elissa P: #7 Harvey Milk's famouse speech "Hope" Despite Milk's short life he was able to make an impact in the world and get his point across through his own form of civil disobedience. Although he did not break any laws by giving his speech he made a great impact on many people. His speech about gay and lesbian rights was a very taboo subject that was greatly looked down upon in shame. This speech showed people of different sexualities that some one was there to stand up for them and that it ws okay to feel as they do. That is was not wrong or immoral to be gay or lesbian. People have a right to choose whom they love and Harvey Milk's speech told every one just that. Harvey Milk's actions of speaking out for gay and lesbian rights started a pathway for gays and lesbians. Harvey made such an impact that there is now a day of remembrence for him. Not only that but a movie was recently released in 2008 about his life, called "Milk." This movie shows the too short life of Harvey Milk filled with politics, civil disobediance, and impact on society. Brain D:#8 Muhammad Ali broke violated the draft evasion law. Draft evasion is the avoidance of induction into compulsory military service. There is two ways to avoid the draft, legally and illegally. To be considered illegal a person has to claim false medical aliments, such has saying they have cancer, chicken pox’s, polio, or any other disease that would prevent them from being drafted. The legal way is to continue an appeal through legal technicalities. The draft has been around scene 1863. But the rules however have changed. During the civil war one can buy exemption for $300. Has time went on the draft included test to see who ‘war is worthy’. Over the span of many years the test has been revised as a way to separate who the military wants from who they would consider ineligible. Now, once you are drafted you must take tests that measure your reading and writing. Draft evasion is a nessacary law. If it was not enforced people simply just wouldn’t go.
Makayla M: #9- Harvey Bernard Milk was trying to bring about homosexuality when he became elected as the American Politician official in San Fransisco, California. He was very famous for his role as a symbol for the gay and lesbian rights. Politics and gay activism were not open about his homosexuality and he did not participate in events like this till around age 40, after his experience in the counterculture of the 1960's.On November 27, 1978, he was murdered by a city supervisor who wanted his job back; Dan White. Although Milk only served as an official for less than a year, he ended up being instrumental and successful in bringing the gay rights to the attention of the American public. Milk's campaign's earned him a high rate of popularity, and won a seat in the city supervisor in 1977 for bringing about social changes throughout the United States. For Milk, gay issues played a major part in his overall human rights perspective. Milk also became successful in becoming an icon for San Fransisco, California; "A martyr for gay rights." He was also called the most famous and significant open LGBT official ever elected in the United States. Harvey Bernard Milk was successful in bringing about homosexuality when he became elected to not only San Fransisco, but the entire United States as well. On the other hand he became unsuccessful when he was murdered. Because of this, he could have continued his strong determination to make the situation work. Milk imagined a righteous world inside his mind and wanted to set out and create it for real for all of us. This was his goal; in the end he was successful.
Makayla M:# 10 - A quote from Thoreau's Civil Disobedience would be, "But government in which the majority rule in all cases cannot be based on justice, even as far as men understand it." This quote is similar to Harvey Milk's situation. Harvey Milk's goal was to bring about homosexuality to the city of San Fransisco, California when he became elected as the American Politician. He himself was gay and he wasn't afraid to let the world know it. He wanted to spread his belief towards his society. This quote goes along with this situation because justice has to do with the quality of being fair, setting laws, or the act of having certain rights. Harvey Milk had all the right himself to be and act the way he wanted. As the American Politician, he also had the right to spread the word about his belief and let the people know that it was okay to be and act this way. Milk was not forcing the society to be gay and believe in what he believed in, he was just showing his people about what he wanted to bring a change into the society. This goes back with the quote because Thoreau is saying that the government rules most of the majority of society in most situations, but not all the cases are based on justice which means being fair and setting certain rights and limits. A man is aloud freedom and should not have to be demanded and disciplined all the time. Milk was aloud to speak his mind and believe in what he wanted to believe in.
Makayla M:#11 Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected for public office in the state of California in 1977, with winning a seat in on the San Fransisco Board of Supervisors. His goal was to spread about his homosexuality and consider being a role model to others as a symbol of gay and lesbian rights. All of his persuading and determining campaigns, won him much popularity. Before Milk was assassinated and he ran for the public office, a man by the name of Dan White was taking that position in being the head of the Public office. Considering the fact that Milk only served for less than a year, White was furious and wanted his job back; White then thought the only way he could get his job back was to kill Harvey Milk. In a sense, Harvey Milk was punished and suffered a consequence; the fact that he was assassinated. Dan White was so determined to get his job back that Milk had to suffer and got killed. At the time, Milk didn't know he was causing an issue with another man who wanted his job back, so how could Milk have known ? If Harvey knew, he probably wouldn't have been assassinated. This was the consequence that Harvey Milk suffered from.
